Cambodia vacations: responsible travel

I just found this article in the Phnom Penh Post and thought you may find it helpful. The booklet they mention is availabe at the link at the bottom of the article, and I don’t get any commission if you buy it ;-)   If you want to travel more responsibly and help the local economy by generating jobs and income for the Cambodian people, this guide will be very useful.

“A woman in a red-and-white krama head scarf smiles, holding her hands together in the traditional sompeah greeting.

Featured on the cover of the third edition of Stay Another Day Cambodia, the 76-page A5 tourism booklet, she seems to be imploring visitors to be mindful of local culture while visiting the country.

As Minister of Tourism Thong Khon points out in his welcoming message to the booklet, the activities on offer were chosen for their responsible tourism practices as well as the participating organisations’ work in the areas of education, culture, community and environment.
Cambodia is an emerging nation striving to rebuild itself after a difficult political past, he said.

“By extending your stay and travelling to other regions of the country …you will also be helping the local economy by generating jobs and income for out people,” Thong Khon said.

The booklet was put together with sponsorship from German Technical Cooperation (GTZ), an international cooperation enterprise for sustainable development.

GTZ private sector promotion chief technical adviser Peter Bolster said destinations for ecotourism in Cambodia were attracting greater numbers of tourists every year.

Stay Another Day gives guidance to all those who want to learn more about the country – those who want to see how traditional cultural values are conserved and developed today,” Bolster said.

Stay Another Day publication director Kim Natacha, who is also the editor-in-chief for Economics Today, said the the two previous editions had proved highly successful.

The guide shows how to participate in cultural activities, plan a side trip with a responsible tour operator, information on adventures in ecotourism.
“Tourists longing for authentic and eye-opening vacations can now be satisfied with the wonders Cambodia has to offer,” Natacha said.

Stay Another Day features information on dining in restaurants hiring disadvantaged youth and visiting shops that participate in fair trade or employ disabled artisans.

60,000 free copies of Stay Another Day have been distributed to major tourist hubs in Cambodia as well as trade fairs and events abroad.
The booklet is available online at www.stayanotherdaycambodia.com. magazine, Kim Natacha, said the the two previous editions had proved highly successful.”

Health and Safety in South East Asia

Mulling over a trip to the exotic delights of South East Asia? Good on you, it is a vibrant and fascinating location. Just take a few simple precautions and you will love it all!

South East Asia sits in what is referred to as the hot tropics. This means that whatever time of the year you visit, count on a tropical climate of hot temperatures, high humidity and sometimes torrential rain.

What accompanies this climate is invariably the presence of some tropical bugs and viruses that you may not be familiar with. I am not saying that you should recoil in horror and select another destination, in fact far from it. What is helpful is the old saying of, forewarned is forearmed.

Firstly I would like to discuss one fundamental issue, and that is about water. In South East Asia, water is abundant, reflecting the fact of their location in the tropics. This water is fine for cooking, (as it is boiled), washing and laundering your clothes. However in most cases is it unwise to drink this water as some gastric bugs may result. Please do not let this put you off, as the solution is really quite straightforward. Bottled water is everywhere in South East Asia and it is also very inexpensive. As an example, a liter of pure drinking water in Cambodia is around 25c US.

The other pre trip basics that I would suggest you tick off before you depart are the vaccinations and preventative medications. Here are the vaccinations I recommend you have before travelling anywhere.

1) Diphtheria/Tetanus. These ailments are devastating and can strike anywhere, even at home. The solution is as easy as a shot, followed by boosters every five years or so.
2) Cholera. See your doctor to get an easy vaccination against this disease.
3) Typhoid. A two shot program will protect you here.
4) Hepatitis A. An initial shot, followed by a follow up one year later will protect you for life.

The other issue that I want to discuss are those mosquito born illnesses. In South East Asia the two ailments that you need to be aware of, are malaria and dengue fever. There are pre emptive medications for these, but just as important, there are easy and sensible strategies that you can adopt whilst in the region.

1) At dawn and dusk, be aware of mosquito activity around you.
2) Use a barrier cream containing the active ingredient DEET.
3) Wear light clothing and avoid still, swampy areas.
4) Carry a mosquito net, and use it for sleeping if other protectants such as spray or screens are not available.

Do not let any of this information deter you from visiting this part of the world. You will love it and hanker to return!

The Risk of the Bird Flu is Still Present Among Us

Public health authorities are alarmed by a strain of H5N1, also known as the virus of the bird flu, which has firs affected the birds across Asia and Russia. It also has infected more than 100 humans in the past 18 months, killing about half of them. Scientists fear that the virus could begin to spread between humans and so this will unleash a global pandemic.

At the annual regional meeting of the World Health Organization in Auckland, New Zealand, among other top items presented, it is expected to be discussed the H5N1 strain of bird flu.

The spokesman of WHO declared that even though the cold months in Asia might reduce the damage produced by the disease, the risk factors will remain the same.

Richard Nesbit, the acting regional director for the Western Pacific of WHO sustained that the pandemic risk is still present because the virus is highly embedded in the environment. Besides the continuous outbreaks in poultry in Indonesia, now there have appeared new cases in Cambodia and Thailand too.

By this moment all the cases when humans were taken ill appeared due to a close contact with infected poultry, but some special cases, like the one when a whole family (seven members) died because the members spread the disease to one another, have warned the scientists about the possibility that the disease could mutate and then transmit easier between humans, leading to a global pandemic.

Richard Nesbit said that there is hope that we will gain control over the disease, and gave as example the case of Vietnam that had 42 people deceased of bird flu (this situating the country in the chart of victims on the second place after Indonesia with 49 dead people), and after the government’s campaign regarding a mass vaccination of poultry there were not recorded any new fatalities.

Nesbit also affirmed that it is very important for people to be prepared, not taken by surprise, and not to forget what had happened, even though there have past three years of bird flu presence, because the risk is still present.

Even though the media and the public got tired of hearing the same old thing about a possible global pandemic, it is the scientist’s and government’s responsibility to continue informing everyone about the evolution of the virus and of the possible risks related to it.
